Project Mustang GT vs. Shelby GT500

With dealers charging up to a $20K markup on Shelby GT500’s, Edmunds Inside Line thought their had to be an easier way to get the power and performance without spending so much. So they took it upon themselves to build their own Shelby GT500 clone on a budget from an old project car they had laying around.

Inside Line began with their long-term 2005 project Mustang that had been sitting around for about a year or so. Next they put together a list of parts and suppliers from which to build their GT500 clone. Through the whole process Inside Line documents everything including photos, videos and prices for what they spent to make this project become a reality in two part series. Here is the link to the first part and the second.

I have to admit it’s one of the better articles I have read lately and it has me thinking about why not do this myself instead of waiting for GT500’s to come down to MSRP. I guess the only thing holding me back is reliability. Yes it would be nice to do a buildup on a stock Mustang GT but how reliable will it be with all the modifications. I think I can hold off for now until the GT500 comes into my price range.
